Q: How did you get started in rallying?
A: My parents used to compete in various rallies and hence I spent a lot time in service areas and workshops as I was growing up. I competed in my first club rally at 17 as soon as I passed my driving test. As I began to get more serious about the sport, I entered a single-make championship, the Peugeot Challenge, which was (and still is) regarded as the best way to try and earn a "works" drive. I won the Peugeot Challenge in 1996 (and finished 3rd overall in the British Championship in the process). This lead to an opportunity to contest the 1997 British Championship with Peugeot in a 306 - leaving me ideally placed when the team decided to step-up their involvment in rallying, bringing the 106 Super GTi (106 Maxi as it was then) over from France at the start of 1998.
Q: Do you prefer gravel or asphalt rallies?
A: Both. A few years ago I would have always answered "gravel" although in the last few years my best results have been on tarmac events.
Q: Which is your favorite event in the British Rally Championship?
A: They are all pretty good. I like the Scottish - we usually have a good run up there and the stages are blindly fast. For tarmac, probably the Manx is my favorite, although I really enjoy the night stages on the Jim Clark Rally.
